Parents and grandparents in Canada have something to look forward to this summer if they intend to sponsor them. As of July 28, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that the 2025 Parents and Grandparents Program will officially open for application.
Over two weeks, IRCC issues invitations to apply (ITAs) to 17,860 eligible sponsors, planning to approve 10,000 completed applications in 2025.
This invitation is a part of Canada’s ongoing Family Sponsorship Program, a strong pillar of the country’s immigration strategy, in addition to programs like the Express Entry Program. The PGP allows qualified Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians to invite their parents and grandparents for Canadian permanent residency.
IRCC Limits 2025 Invitations to 2020 Applicants Only
IRCC announces that it will not open any window for submission of applications for sponsorship in 2025, aligned with previous plans. Instead, all invitations will be sent to the candidates who submitted their application for sponsorship in 2020 and haven’t been selected yet.
Eligible sponsors are advised to check their 2020 mailboxes, including junk or spam folders, to confirm any missed invitation. Applicants selected through this invitation process will move forward with sponsorship application submission.
Application Process for Invited Sponsors
Sponsors with a letter of invitation can submit their application online through the Representative Portal or Permanent Residence Portal, based on whether the candidates are applying directly or via an authorized representative.
Candidates must carefully study the Parents and Grandparents Program offered by the IRCC. The 2020–2022 Intake Report summarizes past years’ trends, quotas, and success rates.
Super Visa Offers Extended Stay for Parents and Grandparents
The Canada Super Visa is a viable alternative to those who haven’t received an invitation in this round. Parents and grandparents can stay in Canada for five years at a time with the Super Visa, a multiple-entry visitor visa that has a maximum 10-year validity. They can also extend their stay by up to 2 years without leaving the country.
To be eligible for a Super Visa, candidates must fulfill minimum income requirements, secure coverage for medical insurance, and be found admissible to Canada. The host should also provide a written commitment of financial assistance for the duration of the visitor’s stay.
IRCC Boosts Family Sponsorship Pathways
Canada prioritizes reuniting families as a strong value of its immigration pathways. While economic immigration pathways like Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program often make news, family-based immigration remains a strong route for building a harmonious culture and vibrant communities.
